Reducing Readmission Rates After Total Hip Replacement: Insights from Two Wisconsin Hospitals Author: Radtke, Brooklyn Date published: 2025 |
Abstract | Total hip arthroplasties (THAs) are one of the most common and expensive surgical procedures within the United States healthcare system, with approximately 2.4 million being performed annually. The number of patients being readmitted after these procedures remains a significant area of concern for healthcare leaders, as it has a significant financial impact on both the patient and the hospital, as well as overall patient outcomes. This paper presents a comparison of management strategies aimed at reducing readmission rates after THAs, gleaned from semi- structured interviews with local healthcare professionals from two different prominent hospitals in La Crosse, WI. Results indicate that continued assessment of the patient journey, pre-operative risk assessment, detailed patient education, and post-operative communication through both digital and physical channels may help contribute to reduced readmission rates. |
