Cross-national Comparisons of Health Care Access and Outcomes Author: Nowell, Matthew Date published: 2025 |
Abstract | The present research aimed to compare access and outcomes of the United States and United Kingdom’s healthcare systems. A classification framework was utilized to assess the structures of these nations’ healthcare systems. This allowed the present research to analyze the differences in attitudes each population had surrounding their healthcare system’s access and outcome measures. Furthermore, utilizing Fundamental Cause Theory and Intersectionality, social and economic factors were assessed for influence on responses. The 2021 Health and Healthcare II survey conducted by the International Social Survey Program (ISSP 2024) was used to examine these differences in attitudes around healthcare metrics in the two nations. This survey included robust demographic information that allowed thorough analysis of their impact on individual responses. Outcomes, as related to Fundamental Cause Theory and Intersectionality, supported the important role that socioeconomic status and the interplay of social statuses has on an individual’s perception of their healthcare outcomes and access. Differences in structure also played a role in the differences between countries that are not explained by individual level statuses. |
