Abstract
| View from street level of Stevens' Grocery that was located at 421 Main Street in downtown La Crosse, WI. The photograph includes several members of the Stevens family, including the children sitting on a small wagon and women looking from the windows above. Additionally, a horse and wagon on the street are also pictured. The photograph was accompanied with a letter written by Benjamin Alonzo Stevens, Jr., a descendent of the original Stevens family, and it states: "Dear Mr. Charles Auenson! I want to thank you for talking with me at your store and in being interested in my story about my great-grandfather, grandfather and my father. I’m sending you this picture of their store and residents in the year of 1888. 'My father was born on the 2nd floor of the frame building in January 29th 1889. My great-grandfather stands in the stairway door; My grandfather in shirt sleeves stands in the store entrance; My grandmother with my aunt Helen are in the middle window-2nd floor over the grocery; Mary C. a cousin is in the right-hand window-2nd floor of the brick building; Two other cousins Josephine and Katherine are in the middle window of the brick building; Uncle Will is in the right window 3rd floor of the frame building; Another Uncle Edwin is one of the three kids playing with the wagon on the sidewalk.' There are other relatives in the windows that I can't identify. We hope this goes through the mail without any damage. My wife joins me in wishing you the best of health. Benjamin Alonzo Stevens Jr." |
