Abstract
| This photograph was published in the La Crosse Tribune on September 30, 1962 with the article "Readied For Oktoberfest Parade." The photograph's caption reads: "Robert A. Farnam, president of the La Crosse County Historical Society (left) was on hand last week to witness a full fledged test of a 1904 model steam pumper which was retired by the fire department nearly a half century ago. The pumper is a possession of the society and is being dressed up for the Oktoberfest next weekend. It will be on display at Copeland Park Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and it will pumping water when its boiler is fired up. In addition, it will be drawn by a team of horses in the parade Saturday. Among the pumper's "big" fires were the Spence-McCord blaze in 1912 and another which threatened West Salem at about that time. It was hauled to West Salem on a flatcar."
On the envelope housing the negative is written: "September 28, 1962. Oktoberfest - Robert Farnam County Historical Society - Prexy and old La Crosse Fire Department steam-powered pumper." |
