Abstract	A black and white photograph of Manuel Martinez, taken by the La Crosse Tribune on June 17, 1980. Martinez was featured in an article written by Terry Shelton that appeared in the La Crosse Tribune on June 18, 1980. In the article, Martinez describes how he swam from his home in Cuba the Guantanamo Bay US Naval base in 1968. Martinez eventually was reunited with his family that had left Cuba for Chicago, where he remained until taking an indefinite leave of absence from his occupation at an electrical manufacturer to travel to Fort McCoy in 1980 to serve as an interpreter to Cuban refugees.
